med Helena Blomqvist & Maria Friberg

Under hösten presenterar Varbergs konsthall utställningen Under isen ligger himlen med konstnärerna Helena Blomqvist och Maria Friberg.

I utställningen Under isen ligger himlen möts två konstnärskap som använder sig av det fotografiska mediet på olika sätt. I fokus står människans relation till naturen och djurriket. Med en poetisk blick på samtidens utmaningar kring klimatförändringar och miljön, söker Helena Blomqvist och Maria Friberg efter balansen mellan hopp och dystopi.

Helena Blomqvist

I Helena Blomqvists bildvärld finns teman som drömmar, miljöfrågor, utanförskap och tidens obevekliga gång. Ofta har de hotade djurarterna huvudrollen. Bildsviten On the Ending of Species visar djurens stillsamma betraktande av världens tillstånd och mänsklighetens härjningar under antropocen. Djuren vandrar omkring på brandhärjade och uttorkade platser på jorden. Begreppet ändling presenteras: en ändling är den sista kända individen av en art eller underart. När ändlingen dör, försvinner med den hela arten. Bildsviten blir som en sorgesång över det som går förlorat. Tankar väcks också om en bättre värld bortom denna. Ett sökande efter en magisk övergång till paradiset: de sälla jaktmarkerna och de eviga vidderna. Drömmer djuren, likt oss människor, också om något bättre?

Maria Friberg

I Maria Fribergs olika bildserier undersöks människans relation till naturen. Ofta arbetar hon med oppositionstemat natur/kultur, där hon låter natur i olika former möta människan och hennes artefakter. I Days of Eyes befinner vi oss i ett tropiskt växthus. Bland gestalter och växter hänger kablar och sladdar. I ett ständigt uppkopplat och virtuellt samhälle diskuterar bilderna om vi kanske har tappat vår koppling till den fysiska världen och naturen. Mirroring Nature består av olika närbilder på växtlighet. Bilderna är formade som antika speglar och öppnar upp till en spegling av oss själva, vår relation till naturen och vårt ansvar gentemot den. I bildsviterna Night Vision och Handed befinner vi oss i en drömsk och sagolik skog. Night Vision befolkas av unga människor och väcker tankar om hoppet i det passiva motståndet. Hur effekten av att ”inte göra” blivit en revolution i en yngre generation. I Handed ser vi väskor och kläder flyta omkring. Serien handlar om överlämnandet och det vemodiga i att släppa taget och lämna något bakom sig. Att gå vidare från en plats eller ett tillstånd, till ett nytt.

Utställningen Under isen ligger himlen undersöker hierarkier och ställer frågor kring idén om människans överlägsenhet över djur och natur. Vad betyder naturen för oss idag? I en värld med översvämningar och bränder, vart vänder vi vår blick efter sökandet av en hoppfull framtid?

Under the Ice Lies the Sky with Helena Blomqvist & Maria Friberg

The exhibition Under the Ice Lies the Sky juxtaposes two artists who use the medium of photography in different ways. The focus is on animals and humanity’s relationship to nature. With a poetic view on the challenges that climate change and the environment constitute for the present age, Helena Blomqvist and Maria Friberg seek a balance between hope and dystopia.

Helena Blomqvist’s visual world contains themes such as dreams, environmental issues, being an outsider, and the relentless passage of time. Often, threatened animal species take centre stage. The pictorial suite On the Ending of Species shows animals tranquilly contemplating the state of the world and humanity’s devastating impact during the Anthropocene. The animals wander around burned and drought-ridden parts of the Earth. The concept of an endling is presented: an endling is the last known individual belonging to a certain species or subspecies. When the endling dies, the entire species is lost. The pictorial suite can be seen as an elegy for what has been lost. It also makes us think about a better world, beyond this one; a quest for a magical transition into paradise: the other side, the eternal, wide open space. Do animals dream of a better world, like we humans do?

Maria Friberg’s different pictorial suites explore humanity’s relationship to nature. Often, she works with the dualistic theme of nature versus culture, letting nature in various forms encounter humans and their artefacts. In Days of Eyes, we find ourselves in a tropical greenhouse. Cables and wires hang among figures and plants. In a society that is constantly online and virtually present, the images discuss whether we have lost our connection with the physical world and nature. Mirroring Nature comprises different close-ups of vegetation. The pictures resemble antique mirrors, allowing us to view a mirror image of ourselves, our relationship to nature and our responsibility for it. In the series Night Vision and Handed the viewer is transported to a dreamlike, fabulous forest. Night Vision is populated with young people and raises the possibility of hope in passive resistance: how the effect of “not doing” something is a revolution in a younger generation. Handed shows bags and clothes floating around. The series is about handing something over and the sadness in letting go and leaving something behind, moving on from a certain place or state to a new one.

The exhibition Under the Ice Lies the Sky investigates hierarchies and poses questions about the notion of humanity’s superiority over animals and nature. What does nature mean to us today? In a world of floods and fires, where can we turn to seek hope for the future?
